Joint Legal Custody

Joint legal custody in Texas is also referred to as managing conservatorship. When joint legal custody has been decided, the rights and duties will include but are not limited to:

  • Receiving information from the opposite parent regarding medical issues of the children
  • Conferring with the other parent about any decisions made about health, education, and general welfare of the children
  • Having access to the children's full medical records and the ability to consult with their health care providers
  • Attending school events
  • Consulting with the education leaders
  • On emergency contact lists
  • Consenting to any medical related emergency of the children

Child custody battles should be avoided at any cost. In the U.S., divorce is a part of life for 1.5 million children a year. Just 69 percent of children are currently living with married parents, a decrease from the 85 percent of children living with parents in 1970. After money, children are the number two thing married couples argue about. Divorces can be an extremely stressful period in life and by trying to move along the process a spouse can agree to things that are not in their best interests or the best interests of the children.
